Tribute to John Whitehead
Author - CJ

On May 11, 2004, John Whitehead, one of America's greatest R&B music legends was shot to death. Whitehead and Gene McFadden formed The Epsilons in the 60s, were discovered by Otis Redding and signed with Stax records. By the end of the 80s, Whitehead and McFadden, a.k.a., McFadden and Whitehead, had accumulated 37 gold or platinum records that defined the energy of Urban America for nearly two decades.

  • Ain't No Stopping Us Now:. Theme song for the Phillies during their World Series run in the 80s
  • Back Stabbers:. Written for the O'Jays
  • For the Love of Money
  • I'll Always Love My Mama
  • Wake Up Everybody:. with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes
  • Where Are All My Friends

Produced by legendary talent-spotters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, McFadden and Whitehead were critical members of the Philadelphia International Records, a.k.a. the legendary 'Sound of Philadelphia', a label that produced groups such as MFSB, Billy Paul and the Three Degrees. In all, they wrote for the Intruders, Billy Paul, Teddy Pendergrass, The Jacksons, Archie Bell, The Dells, Lou Rawls, Freddie Jackson and Melba Moore. Whitehead was a husband and father of 10 children. One of the children witnessed his death.

As part of a tribute to Whitehead and the music he created, join Another 'CJ' Production at the Republic Gardens on May 28th. Reminisce on what led to today's R&B.
